Floodwaters in the valley of the Brahmaputra threatened tonight to wipe out the old Assam tea city of Jorhat Army and civil engineers battled to seal an embankment protecting the city of about 12,000 near the mouth of a tributary of the Brahmaputra. Official reports reaching Calcutta said about 700.000 more people have been driven from their homes as the floods inundated new areas in Assam. This brought to nearly one million the total homeless since the flooding began. 10days ago after 24 hours of rain.
