BANNED BOOKS

Ruling By Vatican

fH Z P A.-Reuter— Copyright) VATICAN CITY, June 15. It is no longer illegal but still a sin for Roman Catholics to read books banned by the church, the Vatican announced yesterday. The church’s “watchdog,” the Sacred Congregation for the doctrine of the faith, said that in future the church would rely on the consciences of the faithful and the vigilance of the Bishops. From today, the index of forbidden books “no longer has any legal value under ecclesiastical law along with the sanctions against forbidden books and those who read, keep or spread them. “But its significance and moral value remain in full vigour in the sense that it calls the attention of every Christian conscience to its duty to avoid . . . reading books which are dangerous to faith and morals.”
