Two Of Four Hurt, Pedestrians
Peter Yarrell, aged 14, of 434 Greers road, suffered severe head injuries in a collision between his bicycle and an articulated truck at the corner of Fitzgerald avenue and Ferry road about 4.30 p.m. yesterday.
He was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital. He is on the seriously ill list and his condition last evening was reported to be only fair. Margaret Lake, aged eight, suffered abrasions and shock when hit by a car outside 863 Colombo street about 3.25 p.m. She was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital where her condition was reported to be satisfactory. Another child, Jill Norcliffe, of 5 Esk place, suffered a broken leg when hit by a car in Pages road near Breezes road, about 2.10 p.m. She was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital where her condition was reported to be satisfactory.
These are the first two pedestrians to be injured in Christchurch this week, during which a “Watch Your Step” campaign is being run by the Transport Department. The campaign stresses that the winter is the most dangerous time for pedestrians. Up to 9 o'clock last evening, 16 persons had been injured in 15 road accidents since Monday morning. Miss E. E. Wilkins. of 270 Worcester street, suffered leg and ankle injuries when a motor-scooter and car collided at the corner of Cashel street and Fitzgerald avenue about 7.50 a.m. She was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital where her condition is reported to be satisfactory.
