Caged Birds

Sir,—So that an official of the Canary and Caged Birds’ Club may attempt to justify the showing of a caged thrush at the recent show, 1 will repeat the first anonymous inquiry (not mine) as to the legality of this in New Zealand. Legal or not, it is a sadistic practice.—Yours, etc., PHYLLIS NEWELL.

June 10, 1966. [The show manager of the Christchurch Canary and Cage Bird ~lub (Mr P. T. Watkinson) replies: “The cage in which the thrush was staged during the few days of the show is a ‘show cage.’ The bird normally lives in a spacious aviary. When a fledgling this bird was rescued from a cat and has since been a pet. The beautiful condition of the bird’s plumage, its bright eye and song during the show prove that the bird is happy with life. The thrush has been exhibited at shows in New Zealand for almost 50 years and in England for 75 years. At the national show held in England a few months ago many thrushes were exhibited.]
