June 18 STAFFORD CABINET.—A New Zealand Gazette published on the 15th June contains an announcement that Mr. Stafford has resigned the office of Colonial Treasurer, which has been accepted by Mr. Jollie. It would appear b y this announcement that the Stafford cabinet which has taken just nine months in formation, is naw complete. In the House of Representatives the Government will be represented by Mr. Stafford Mr. Jollie, Colonel Haultain, and Mr’ PatJson; in the Upper House
by Colonel Russell and Mr. Johnston. It certainly does not seem very great in debating power; nor will it add to the strength of the Ministry that the most important officer of the whole—the Treasurer —will have to meet the House entirely new to the duties of his office. We believe that no attempt will be made by any party in the House to unseat Mr. Stafford’s Government, but it is impossible to believe that a cabinet constructed of such elements, not only weak, but discordant, can long hold together. ».
