Trust To Build Home For Aged

A trust representing the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council, and- Christchurch South Rotary has been formed to build, equip and operate a home for the aged in Lyttelton street. It will be known at the George Manning Home

The board comprises Mr M. J. Paulger (president), a company director; Mr FL R. Feers (secretary), a friendly society secretary; Mr G. F. Dawson, a Government employee; Mrs M. C. Tixzard. a friendly society welfare worker; Dr. H. R. Donald, a physician; Miss M. E. Rea. superintendent of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association; Dr. D. A. Andrews, a physician; and Mr S. W. Hayes, a builder. The trust, known as the Manchester ' Unity Welfare Homes Trust Board, hopes to build a 50-bed home on land bequeathed to the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council 13 years ago by Mr Patrick Hennessy. The site is next to the West Spreydon School and at the back of Hennessy place, where the council has erected eight pensioners* cottages. The proposed building will have three wings. Two of the wings will contain together 30 residential rooms, and it is proposed that the third

wing should contain 20 beds for the inflrm who require temporary nursing care or a rest cure.

The architects are Messrs Helmore Cotterill and Hall. Tn a statement, Mr Peers said that with the ever increasing problem of accommodation and geriatric care facilities for the elderly and infirm, any addition to the present inadequate provisions should be well received by the people of Christchurch. “In naming the home the George Manning Home, the trust does so not only in honouring a champion of the elderly of Christchurch, but also In honour of those many other citizens of this city, all embodied under the office of the chief citizen, the Mayor," Mr Peers said. Mr Peers said that Christchurch shared with other major centres the problem of accommodating the age and Infirm. In spite of private nursing homes, church and welfare geriatric homes, there was no lessening of demand.
