DISEASE IN PINES
No Indication Of Easing (N.Z. Pres« Association) ROTORUA, June 14. The disease dothistroma pini continues to spread through New Zealand pine forests. Foresters are having to reassess the advisability of placing too much reliance on radiata as the disease shows no signs of slackening its grip on radiata forest throughout the central North Island. Recently the disease was discovered in forests in the Nelson area. Till then, the South Island had been regarded as free of it. In the last six months part of Kaingaroa forest and N.Z. Forest Products’ radiata areas have developed a brownish tinge which is quite obvious to pilots of low-flying aircraft The brown patches mark, areas where dothistroma has defoliated whole pockets of radiata stands. Douglas fir is Immune to the disease, and the Forest Service plans to put In 250 acres of douglas at Horohoro, instead of radiata. An N.Z. Forest Products official said the company had not yet decided on its 1966 planting programme. The company owns large forest areas fringing the dothistromaprone Mamaku plateau.
