Near Disaster
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 14.
Fire extensively damaged the distillery boilerroom of a Henderson Valley vineyard early this morning and almost caused an explosion that would have wrecked New Zealand's first brandymaking project Had the fire not been stopped from spreading it would have demolished the main storeroom, distillery and office of Western Vineyards and with it 300 gallons of fortifying spirit 500 gallons of brandy and 60,000 gallons of wine. But four machines from three fire stations—two
from Henderson, one from Titirangi and one from Glen Eden—turned out to battle the blaze. The vineyard owner, Mr D. Russell, saw the fire first at about 1 a.m. He said coal starked near the boiler had been sparked off.
Within live minutes of their arrival, he said, firemen had the blaze under control. “If the roof had rome in. the bond store would have caught alight and it would have been curtains," he said. The fortifying spirit would have caused a big explosion. Damage to the building is estimated at £lOOO.
