Second Worst
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 14. As a centre of juvenile crime, Christchurch is second only to Auckland, says the annual report of the police.
In the year ended March 31 the Auckland police dealt with 1986 cases involving 1874 children under 17. Christchurch police handled 1681 cases involving 1162 children.
Cases dealt with in other centres numbered Lower Hutt 973 (824) children, Hamilton 917 (727) Palmerston North 916 (885), Wellington 845 (643), Napier 675 (416), Dunedin 517 (426), Hastings 417 (284), Whangarei 395 (255), Gisborne 355 (221), Rotorua 342 (299). These were New Zealand’s 12 worst centres of juvenile delinquency. Figures for other towns included Nelson 202
’(158), Blenheim 215 (134), Grey mouth 152 (147), Timaru 163 (245). FEWER CASES
The 22 juvenile crime prevention sections handled 445 fewer cases than in the previous year.
This continued the downward trend as there were 218 fewer cases in 1964 than the year before. The number of children Involved was 9602, compared with 10,315 In 1964. Sixteen-year-old boys and 15-year-old girls were the most troublesome.
Some of the offences or incidents involving children were: theft and receiving, 3834, burglary 2122, missing 803, conversion of motorvehicles 671, wilful damage 628, liquor 41, conversion of bicycles 365, sex 298, traffic 164 and assault 103.
