L. G. Milne Defeats Top-Ranked Player

With fine control end accuracy L. G. Milne, a New Zealand representative of some 10 years ago, upset the topranked Christchurch player, D. J. Triggs, when the Canterbury A grade inter-club squash rackets competition was continued on Monday evening. In a clash at Tlmaru between two top South Islanders, the Canterbury open champion G. L. Bird beat G. A. Davidson in three games.

Timaru registered yet another 10-point win, and retain a substantial lead In the championship. Worcester surprised by beating Officers’ Club without losing a match, and Collegiate won on games against Chester; two games won by the improved D. G. Hamilton over M. O. Holdsworth proving decisive. For Christchurch, which beat University, B. M. Garrett secured his first win over J. Henderson.

In the Bird-Davidson, and Milne-Trigg's encounters there was much squash of high quality. Bird, in his present fine form, was too good for Davidson as both players had their first inter-club match of any severity this season. Henderson, lethargic and apparently a little unwell, could not match Garrett’s determination and court coverage. Superb Display During the three games he won, Milne played superbly, with extreme control of pace and position, and with much subtle variation. Triggs made a number of unusual errors, but he contributed to a very good match, and a sudden Increase in the severity of his shots often left Milne standing in the fourth game. The squash was usually constructive with a number of interesting drop shot duels close to the walls, and both players made good use of boasts and angles. Although Officers’ Club failed to win a match, all four were extremely hard-fought and al’ but one went to five games. D. J. Marshall’s four-game win over M. R. Blank with a very good effort, and L. G. Williams recovered from two games down against G. C. P. Beadel. For Collegiate J. G. Foulds beat B. V. Hamilton in straight games, but his task would have been much harder had Hamilton not persistently positioned himself several yards behind centre court. He understandably made many drop and volley errors, and the extra yardage he needed to cover left him always stretching for anything played short. Results: — Timaru 4 games. Ashburton 0. —G. L.
