NEAR OUTER LIMITS
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) HANOVER. Human ability to perform record feats in track events was reaching its outer limits, according to a leading West German sports physician, the Associated Press reported. Dr. Herbert Reindell, president of the current 16th World Congress for Sports Medicine, said he did not expect anyone would run a three-minute mile. (The pres-
ent world record Is 3min 53.65ec.) Rather, Dr. Reindell said, he foresaw some slight improvements in current records and a broadening of the field of athletes able to reach standing records. Dr. Reindell, a member of the medical faculty at Freiburg University and heart specialist, said that the rec-ord-breaking trend of recent years was brought about by improvements in training
techniques. These techniques, had enabled athletes to reach their maximum capabilities. Earling Asmussen, a professor of physical education at the University of Copenhagen, said that while track performances were reaching a limit, he foresaw a continuation of the record trends in field events, such as shot-putting and high-jumping, due to the continuing increase in size and weights of humans throughout the world.
