Sussex Beats West Indies

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter —Copyright? HOVE (Sussex). The West Indies lost the first match of their current cricket tour of England on Monday, when Sussex beat them by nine wickets. The team was dismissed for 67 in its second innings—the second lowest score the West Indies have made in England —and Sussex was left needing only six runs to win.

The pace bowler J. Snow followed his seven wickets for 29 in the first innings, by taking four for 18 in 11.3 overs in the second innings. Another seam bowler, T. Buss, took four for 18 in 11 overs. The West Indies lost their first five men for 20 on Monday and looked like falling short of their smallest total, 58, against Yorkshire in 1928. Their defeat came only three days before the start of the second test match against England. The Sussex opening batsman, K. G. Suttle, was struck on the side of the

jaw as he swayed Into a C. C. Griffith bouncer, on the first ball of Sussex’s second innings. Suttle, playing his 335th successive game for the county, went down heavily and had to be helped from the field. No serious damage was done. Sussex, seven for 122 on Saturday In reply to the West Indians’ 123, was all out for 185 to its first innings. Griffith (four for 43) shared the wickets with R. Cohen, who took six for 71, his best figures of the tour. Trailing by 82 runs and with an awkward five minutes to go before lunch the West Indies were immediately to difficulties, to their second innings. Only two runs were on the board when E. D. McMorris edged A. Buss and was brilliantly caught by the Sussex skipper, Pataudil, at second slip for a duck. The collapse began to earnest after lunch. M. C. Carew edged a short ball from Buss to Pataudi at short leg (two for seven), S. M. Nurse spooned an easy catch to Foreman at short square leg off the same bowler (three for 12), J. A. Snow trapped B. Butcher (four for 16). and then G. S. Sobers, after two crackling drives for four, tried to hit another off Buss and was Olean bowled (five for 20).
