Undue ‘Pruning’ Denied
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 14. The Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) -said that there was no substance in the Public Service Association’s allegation that Government expenditure had been pruned to a degree that might be excessive. “The Secretary of the Treasury has now reported to me that he is satisfied that any
pruning which is done in the interests of economy and efficiency does not prevent any Government department from carrying out the Government’s policy,” Mr Lake said. Mr Lake said the general secretary of the P.S.A, (Mr D. P. Long) had admitted that the association used only facts available to the public. “It is clear that not only do spokesmen for the executive of the P.S.A. have no more authority as Government employees for making the claim they did, but that the claim itself is without substance,” said Mr Lake. Earlier Mr Lake had warn-
ed that the Minister in Charge of State Services would consider whether any action was required to deal with “the circumstances of public servants making contentious public statements about Government expenditure.” Mr Lake said he could not accept that any public servant or group of public servants had the right to make such allegations in public.
