‘Privilege Used To Attack Academics’

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, June 14. “Government members have again used privilege to pass on from attacking the decisions of the university to attacking academic staff,” Professor R. M. Chapman, head of the political studies department at Auckland University, said after listening to the broadcast of Parliament tonight.

“Mr Shand repeated the entirely false charge that I am an ardent pacifist. I served for three years during the war in the Armed Forces and the claim is nonsense, as is the abusive term ‘peacenik’ which he repeated. “My views on Vietnam are published and they do not agree with those of the Minister,” he said. Professor Chapman said Mr Shand had mis-stated the arrangements planned for the individual tuition prescribed by the university for Mr Godfrey.

“I had already arranged

with my staff that there should always be two staff members present for each tutorial. Tutorials were to be held on university property in the political studies building.”
