CHILDREN SUSPECTED

Call For Junior Red Cross

A Bryndwr man last week became suspicious of two obliging children who said they were from the Junior Red Cross. After he paid them for doing a job, he saw them meet a group of other children in the street and walk towards a sweet shop. The man telephoned the organiser for the North Canterbury Junior Red Cross (Miss T. G. Eldridge). She investigated the complaint but could not trace the children.

The Junior Red Cross raised money from work, like the Scouts’ Bob-a-Job, but the emphasis was on service without pay, Miss Eldridge said yesterday.

If money is being raised by doing odd jobs, each child has a work card signed, either by Miss Eldridge, or the child’s school teacher. This ensured validity. Although the temptation was always present for children to make money in that way, Miss Eldridge said it was only the second incident that had been reported to her since she was appointed organiser 10 years ago.
