(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 13. A medical research fellowship in diabetes will be established in 1967, although help will not immediately be available from the Golden Kiwi lottery. The Diabetic Association decided at its annual meeting at the week-end to call for applications, dosing on October 31, for the fellowship to be taken in New Zealand during 1967. The initial term will be two years, with a possible extension to three years.

The fellowship will be advertised in New Zealand, Australia, Britain and the United States. “It seems easier to get funds for a coop for fighting cocks in some small hamlet than for a major medical research project,’ the associations’ president, Mr J. S. Reid, said today, commenting on advice from the Lottery Funds Committee that it could not help until a specific project was implemented. With £4500 in hand of the

£lO,OOO needed, and another £4OOO expected from a national raffle this year, the association had decided to go ahead in any event. “It looks as if we have to start the job ourselves and be prepared to tackle it alone if needed,” Mr Reid said. The successful fellow wilt be selected by a committee composed of the association’s medical advisory panel and Sir Charles Burns. Sir Edward Sayers, Dr. W. E. Henley and Mr Reid.
