Concentrating On Refunds

fN.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 13. The Inland Revenue Department is not acting immediately upon arrears shown in current returns of income. “We are deliberately not sending out returns where the person owes the Government money,” said the regional controller of taxes (Mr C. Rosen) today. “We hope to do it later in the year, probably October or November.” The reason for this was to allow the department to concentrate on sending refunds to taxpayers who had overpaid during the last financial year. The official date for forwarding returns expired last week, but returns were still arriving at the rate of about 3000 a day.
