VANITY BAR TO MEMBERSHIP’
League For Hard Of Hearing Vanity prevented many partially deaf people in Christchurch joining the League for Hard of Hearing, Mrs L. S. Birdling, a lipreading tutor, said yesterday. Many did not like to acknowledge a handicap such as deafness, she said. Mrs Birdling said total membership of the league was about 400, and she estimated there were at least three times that number in Christchurch who would be eligible. "The ’sooner these people come to terms with themselves the more help we can give them,” she said. Mrs Birdling said the league tried to teach the deaf, and partially deaf, to lead fuller lives. This was by instruction classes and social activities. Among the many advantages offered, the league kept its members informed on new developments for helping the deaf, Mrs Birdling said.
