HERBICIDE IN GLASSHOUSE
Grower Faces £lOOO Loss (N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM, June 13. A hormone herbicide found !n the soils of two glasshouses in Blenheim has caused severe damage to tomato plants. One grower I will face a loss of about £lOOO. The Department of Agriculture is trying to find out how i the material got there. The instructor in horticulture in Blenheim, Mr D. W. McCallum, said that until all possible avenues had been investigated no definite conclusions could be drawn. “There is no suggestion of carelessness, however,” he said. “There has been some severe damage on one property, and damage is developing on another.” The herbicide and others in Its group were in cereal crops, and in hard-to-kill plants such as gorse and briar. It was also known to persist in the straw of sprayed cereal crops, and the droppings of livestock grazed on sprayed areas.
