Brigade Not Called; Fire Starts Again

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 12. Living accommodation on the top floor of a two-storey brick building in Grey Lynn was gutted early today after a fire downstairs had been put out by the occupants with buckets on Saturday evening.

The Auckland Fire Chief (Mr L. F. Wilson) said today that serious damage to the building, on the corner of Great North road and Ariki street, Grey Lynn, could have been avoided if the occupants had called the fire brigade to the first blaze. “They thought that they had put it out, but it travelled up the wall overnight and broke out again,” said Mr Wilson. “This illustrates the folly of not calling the brigade, which is trained to find these fires.” The top floor of the building was well ablaze when the brigade was called about 5 a.m. today. Most of the six residents had time to pack suitcases before leaving the burning building.

Several shops on the ground floor were damaged by smoke and water.
