Share Market Opens On Promising Note
Rises outnumbered falls in both the New Zealand and overseas lists when the share market opened for the week yesterday. Trading was over a good range of issues, but turnover was lower than might have been expected, even with Australian exchanges closed for the Queen’s Birthday holiday.
Banks and breweries were in demand: Bank of N.S.W. Australia rose 3d to 46s 3d, Dominion Breweries at 17s 3d and New Zealand Breweries at 13s 7d each rose Id, while Taranaki Breweries rose 6d to Ils—a peak for the year. New Zealand Insurance gained Id to 21s Bd, but National lost 3d to 22s 3d. Firth Concrete at 25s and Rex Consolidated at 29s each added 9d.
Reacting to company announcements, Manthel Motors rose 3d to 23s 3d, and United Empire Box gained 2d to 10s 6d in Wellington and 1968 notes rose Id to 9s 3d. Rothmans recovered 3d more to 25s 3d, but New Zealand Newspapers lost 3d to 66s 9d in Wellington. B.H.P. regained 3d to 51s 3d, and Colonial Sugar 6d to 25s 3d.
