Gymnastic Festival

A national schools’ Gymnastic festival—the second in the Dominion—will be held in Cowles Stadium on Saturday, August 20, according to the organising secretary, Mr K. O. Plunkett, of Christchurch. A coaching clinic on the

following Monday morning will allow visiting coaches to help children with technique training. Competitoins will be. held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Saturday with a display of items and a demonstration by team winners in the evening. The tournament is the springboard to New Zealand championship competition and many of the visiting gymnasts will go to the national cham-

pionships In Lower Hutt the following week. Canterbury will be represented in all grades. Only primary school competitions from the province attended the first tourney last year when the girls’ A team finished second in its grade. Entries have been received from Northland, Auckland, South Auckland, Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui, Taranaki Wairarapa, West Coast, North Island, Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury and Invercargill. The standard of compulsory exercises is high and this results in restricted entry. Teams of four will compete in four grades: secondary girts and boys and primary girls and boys. Billets for 172 visitors will be needed.
