Girls’ Brigade Anniversary

One hundred past and present members and friends of the eighth Christchurch Girls' Brigade Company gathered at the week-end to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary. Captain J. Barton welcomed the guests and spoke of the company's history since its formation in 1941. During the years 200 girls had enrolled and seven captains had been commissioned, she said. Programmes and uniforms had altered, but the ideals and devotion required of leaders remained unchanged. The regional commissioner (Miss D. Strachan) explained changes in the movement to past members. Mrs D. M. Bergman spoke on behalf of the advisory committee. Mrs E. Mclntyre, daughter of the late Mrs H. Falla, the first captain of the company, cut the birthday cake. Entertainment included a display of Scottish country dancing by eight brigadiers, films, and a musical item by Mrs D. Rosewell. On Sunday afternoon the company paraded at Linwood Baptist Church. The service was conducted by the Rev. A. Hodges and the Rev. G. Coombs gave the address. Brigadiers Josyn Hopkins and Rosemary Lynch read the lessons.
