Nine Debutantes At Labour Party Ball

Nine debutantes were presented to the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) at the annual ball held by the Papanui branch of the Labour Party in the Winter Garden last evening. They were Misses Lesley Godfrey, Sandra Clearwater, Sheryl O’Connor, Clarina James, Patsy Godfrey, Colleen Larner, Marlene Steenhart, Maria Godinet and Caroline Wiltshire. Bowls of red and gold flowers and pot plants were placed around the ballroom. A large white and gold scroll commemorating the jubilee of the Labour party was placed in the official alcove. Photographs of Labour leaders past and present were placed around the room, together with small silver ferns. Guests were received by the president of the branch (Mr E. McCreanor) and Mrs McCreanor. They included the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and Mrs Manning; the president of the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee (Mr G. Scott) and Mrs Scott; Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., and Mrs Macfarlane; Mr J. Mathieson, M.P., and Mrs Mathieson; Sir Eruera Tirikatene, M.P., and Mrs Tirikatene; Miss M. B. Howard, M.P.; Mr M. A. Connelly, M.P., and Mrs Connelly; the secretary of the representation committee (Mr J. Gregor); the president of the Canterbury Trades Council (Mr R. A. Hill); and the secretary of the council (Mr S. Harris). Mrs Kirk wore a gown of sapphire blue Thai silk with a full skirt highlighting gold embroiderie. The fitting bodice featured a round neckline and small sleeves.

Mrs McCreanor chose a gown of black star dust crepe. The fitted bodice was of black lace re-embroidered with jet beads. The skirt featured a straight front panel and the back was slightly gored. The ball committee comprised: Chairman, Mr McCreanor; secretary, Mrs McCreanor; Mesdames C. Mumford, I. Rosevere, J. Nash, M. B. Maguire, H. Harris, Mr A. Rennie.
