Investigation Of Links Shortage

The problem posed by the shortage of golf courses in Canterbury will be tackled by a three-man sub-committee of the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association.

The setting-up of the subcommittee was suggested by Mr G. V. Williams at a meeting of the association’s management committee last night in the light of remarks made by Mr I. B. Cromb at the annual meeting of the body. Messrs Williams, I. A. W. Munro, and J. D. Tryon were appointed to fill the positions on the sub-committee. Mr A. C. Barr (Avondale) protested that it was not the duty of the association to start new clubs. But Mr I. Jory (Rangiora) said the subcommittee’s task was to investigate and give a lead. “Otherwise,” he said, “we will be in the same position in five years’ time.” The suggestion of ways and means was Mr I. A. W. Munro’s (Windsor) definition of the sub-committee’s assignment. But Mr C. J. Ward (Christchurch) said the only ways and means of forming a club were to have a body of people with a common desire to play golf. The right way to approach the question was

to obtain the people first, not the courses. Mr E. G. Batstone (Waitikiri) said many people were waiting to loin clubs. The sub-committee could, perhaps, discover their identity and get them together on the question. A body of people inexperienced in the manning of a golf club could not be assembled and expected to start a club, retorted the chairman (Mr A. D. Russell). Not Available Mr Ward, who had been nominated for the post of manager of the New Zealand team to play in the world series at Mexico, sought the consent of the committee to withdraw his name from the list of candidates. He said he would be unable to leave Christchurch at the time of the tournament.
