County Engineers Want Job Defined

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 13. Legislation to protect the public and to ensure that public money is spent to the best advantage will be sought by the Institute of County Engineers.

Mr K. H. P. Beck (Geraldine) said at the institute's conference today that a recent survey by the National Roads

Board had shown that money in the North Canterbury area was not being spent to the best advantage. Some counties did not have resident engineers and relied on consultants. He said his remarks were no reflection on consultant engineers, but consultants could not always adequately supervise work being done and they often signed National Roads Board certificates without knowing their implications. Mr Beck moved “that this institute request the New Zealand Institution of Engineers actively to promote the bringing down of legislation that will protect the public by establishing regulations defining the place of professional civil engineers within the ramification of local government” The motion was carried. Rubbish Fire.—A rubbish fire in a steel trailer on the premises of W. Toomey, Ltd, 21-23 Ferry road, at 7.50 p.m. yesterday caused no damage. Firemen from the Headquarters station put out the blaze.
