Government marines, outnumbered three to one, eariy today beat back a heavy Viet Cong attack after a 12-hour battle in sandy coastal lowlands south of Da Nang. It began as a skirmish yesterday afternoon as the marine battalion and local militia began a search operation near a river, five miles south of Quang Ngai city.

Then the marines encountered a. guerrilla force, estimated at three battalions, and heavy fighting went on until early morning.
