Irrigation Charges
Sir, —A letter signed “Irrigator" accused certain gentlemen of attempting to give a false impression of the Government’s proposed increased water charges on the Ashburton-Lyndhurst water scheme. “Irrigator” is doing exactly what he accuses others of. As a contract guarantee of £5O a year will be £3OO, perhaps he could work out the percentage. Water is only one charge to the irrigator. Headraces, border-dyking, and rebordering cost a lot of money, and production is lost. Owing to the grader’s pulverising and breaking down the structure of the soil, water applied the first year after this treatment is a dead loss. Farmers are fighting a hard battle against rising costs and cannot afford fifth-columnists in their ranks. —Yours, etc., J. LOGAN. June 10, 1966.
