Rose Beats Games Choice In Kennett Cup Steeples

The New Zealand harrier representative, B. Rose (New Plymouth), had a commanding win in the senior Kennett Cup steeplechase at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday afternoon. Rose won the six-mile race over varied, and in places heavy, going in 31min 9sec from a strong field, including several runners from other centres.

Among those beaten by Rose was last year’s winner, R. P. Welsh, chosen for the Empire Games later this year and a New Zealand representative with Rose at the world harrier championships in Belgium last year.

Rose relished all sorts of going, although Welsh had slightly the better of things in the rough. There was little to separate them for twothirds of the distance, however. Rose, Welsh, and the captain of the New Zealand harrier team last year, P. N. Sidon (Caversham, Dunedin), all applied the pressure, and J. D. Macdonald, the first Canterbury man home in fourth place, and G. Dravitsky (New Plymouth) were handy. Rose and Welsh showed rare ability over the obstacles and at some stage in the four laps jumped all the hurdles cleanly, a marked contrast to many others, who clambered over. Pressure Such was the pressure of the tactics that the leaders completed their first two laps in tittle more than 15mln, about a minute faster than the time of the winner in the junior race decided over that distance. Rose, Welsh and Sidon were a closely knit trio for much of the distance, with another seven or eight runners strung out over the next 30 yards. Sensing that Welsh was flagging a Mttle, Rose applied the pressure after two laps. The gap appeared and gradually grew. Rose raced in to the final lap with a 30yd break that steadily lengthened. It was a fine win for Rose, who revelled in the conditions and could have finished with a furious sprint had it been called for. He was a 100 yards clear of Welsh with an equal margin to Sidon. W’elsh ran to the limit of his capabilities on the day and looked more tired than Rose. Although success would have been sweet, Welsh was not prepared to sacrifice his over-all training programme to sharpen for the Kennett Cup race. Visiting runners took eight of the first 12 places. Otago University dominated the teams' contest. Its four men counted for points in the first 11 places. The second team, Christchurch, had to go back to twenty-fifth to complete its quartet. Visitors Successful Dunedin runners also won both the individual and teams' honours in the junior threemile race. A Mornington representative, J. Campbell, took the individual title by a margin of five seconds in 16mln 7sec, with P. Sumpter (University) running an exciting final-stage duel for second with J. Sheddan (Olympic), who was having his first junior race after promotion from colts’ ranks. Mornington won the teams' match also, again with its four finishing in the first 11. for 30 points, less than half that of the second team, Technical. Another Mornington runner, M. Campbell, claimed success in the junior colts (under 14) division. Miss D. Dixey won a combined event for senior and junior women by 25 yards from Miss A. Kennedy. The first junior home was Mis's J Horton, who was fourth in the combined field.
