Clash Of Women’s Basketball Leaders Disappointing
The seventh round of the Canterburysenior women’s basketball competition had both exciting and disappointing moments.
An eagerly anticipated game, that between the two unbeaten teams, Technical and New Brighton, proved very disappointing, Technical winning with very little effort. More exciting, however, was the game between Sacred Heart and Teachers’ College. Here there were frequent displays of excellent basketball and technical skill, and there was enough suspense to make the game most interesting. In the final game of the day, West A beat West B by a large margin.
Results:— Sacred Heart 32, Teachers’ College 30. Technical 42, New Brighton 18. West A 43, West B 9. Paints.—Technical 12, New Brighton 9, West A 8, Sacred Heart 7, St. Nicholas 4, Teachers’ College 2, West B 0. Sacred Heart v. Teachers' College In the very fast first half Sacred Heart, with some excellent goal shooting, and aided by unfortunate play by Teachers' College in the circle, established a strong lead. This trend continued through the first half, and by half-time Sacred Heart led, 20-6. However, in the second haM the game took on a new character. Teachers' College closed up its play and the defence im•proved. Nevertheless, passes stiM were too long and easily Intercepted. Teachers’ College began to
make up the difference In the score, getting to 24-15, and in the tense play that followed the score went from 28-31, 29-31. Near the end, the game deteriorated with a large amount of untidy play on the part of both teams. Although D. McGregor and A. Sfciil'ilng shot with confidence for Teachers’ College, time was against them, and Sacred Heart just managed to hold on for a narrow victory. Referee: Mrs L. Webb. Technical v. New Brighton This was a singularly disappointing game. New Brighton playing well below Its standard of last week. Technical easily and early established its superiority with four goals to Brighton's one after the first few minutes. This was taken to 7-1 a little later. Technical maintained its fine form, with J. Kimber playing well and S. Norman shooting with astonishing accuracy. New Brighton's goal shoots, however, were playing inaccurately and this was aggravated by faulty passing in the goal circle, which stowed play considerably. After half-time, when Technical led. 22-7, Technical managed to keep a firm grip with less serious effort. New Brighton attempted to strengthen its position with some strong defensive play, but the effort came too late. Referee: Miss P. Gallagher. West A v. West B This game was almost completely one-sided, with West A over-running West B. The score went from 7-1 to 12-1, and the half-time score was 15-5. West A continued to forge ahead, with little effort required to Increase its lead. Referee: Mrs B. D. Hart.
