RACING Tundra Ends Career With Win
"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN. Tundra ended a successful racing career with a decisive win in the Provincial Handicap, the first leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double at Wingatui on Saturday.
She outstayed the top-weight, Kumai, and the favourite, Certain, after being last in the early running.
It was Tundra’s 12th win ■nd her fifth for the season. Her stake earnings are nearly £6OOO. A good return for the 300gns/paid for her as a yearling at the Trentham sales Trained at Gore by E. A. Winsloe, the Alpenhorn mare
is raced by Mr and Mrs W. L. Aynsley. Tundra will be mated with Ayrshire Bard, which is standing his first season at Mr Aynsley’s Gainsborough Stud at Gore. Big Smoke completed the double with a runaway win in the Members’ Handicap. The Tundra-Big Smoke combination paid £22 Is 6d for £l. Big Smoke’s win was not well received by a section of the crowd.
Big Smoke’s owner-trainer, D. P. Wilson, was questioned by the stipendary stewards to explain the horse’s improve- ■ ment. His explanation was I accepted. It was Big Smoke’s first i win for 15 months and his i form was a complete reversal . of his two previous showings • at the meeting when he • finished sixth and seventh after appearing to have every t chance. ’ The win gave J. R. Dowling success in the T.A.B. double.
