Drivers Plan Stoppages

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 12. A complete stoppage of drivers in the Wellington area is planned for next Tuesday morning.

The Wellington Drivers’ Union executive decided tonight that a stop work meeting will be held in the Trades Hall at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21. Each of the meetings is expected to last up to half a day. The meetings have been called so that drivers can hear the reasons for the breakdown in negotiations for a new award. The union secretary, Mr K. G. Douglas, said that about 1000 drivers are expected to attend. Similar stop-work meetings are planned for Palmerston North on June 23 and Masterton on June 28. They will be asked to endorse the six demands that the national executive wanted incorporated in the new national award. These are:— Increased wages. The right to sick leave. Wet weather gear. Increased trailer payments. Three weeks* annual holiday at average pay. Double time on Saturday after three hours at time and a half.

Mr Douglas said a call would be made to the members to give active support for the winning of these demands on a three-level approach. The primary aim would be to win the demands on a national basis; failing that a win on a local basis; and if this was not effective on an individual job basis with separate agreements. The secretary of the National Drivers’ Federation (Mr W. J. Welsh) said the employers’ last offer had been for an increase of 15s a week, plus a 5s trailer allowance.

Mr Welsh said that it was not a sufficient increase in the basic rate because it was already far exceeded in the rul-

ing rates being paid many main centre drivers.

Deliveries of many goods in the Auckland city area will stop for some hours on the morning of June 29 while 2500 truck, van, tanker and machine drivers attend a stopwork meeting in the town hall, beginning at 8 a.m. The meeting has been called by the Northern Drivers’ Union.
