Govt. Absent From Vietnam Panel

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, June 12. The National Government was not represented at a public discussion of its Vietnam policies at Waikato University on Saturday.

I The advertisements for the lecture and discussion listed ! members of the panel as Dr. iZ. During, the Rev. A. O.

Jones, Dr. A. M. Finlay, Opposition member for Waitakere, and a “spokesman for Government policy yet to be nominated.”

The absence of the “Government spokesman” did not pass unnoticed. Several members of the public deplored the Government's absence.

“No-one has come along to support the action the Government is taking,” said one man. “We are getting only one side of the picture.” The audience was told that the first invitation was sent to Mr L. F. Sloane, Government member for Hobson, who recently returned from Vietnam. He turned down the invitation “at short notice.” Sir Leslie Munro, Government member for Waipa, was keen to attend but had a previous engagement. None of the other Waikato district Government members of Parliament or National Party spokesmen was available.
