Western Interest In Soviet Fashion

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, June 12. The West is turning to Russia for fashion ideas, according to a Soviet newsletter issued by the Russian Embassy in Canberra.

The article claims that the trend has deep political significance. “Fashion trends are determined by the spirit of the times, and are affected by the tastes and tendencies of the mass of the people,” the article says. “Evidently we are dealing here with a singular tribute to the interest displayed in the Soviet Union, a recognition of its role and achievements, which keep it constantly at the centre of attraction of the Western world.” A brief glance through top

fashion magazines such as “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazzar” proves that Russian styles are setting the pace, says the article.

“Mannequins of the world’s best fashion houses demonstrate traditional Russian costumes against a background of the Kremlin and architectural monuments of Leningrad,” it says. The article does not mention the film, “Dr. Zhivago,” which has inspired some of the. interest in Russian fashions.
