K. Nicholas In Form
SUBURBS 18: W. Moultrie and B. Metson tries; K. Nicholas four penalty goals. OLD BOYS 10: A. G. Steel and P. Sharr tries; R. Grenfell two conversions.
Under excellent conditions at Sunnyside, Suburbs overcame stubborn resistance from High School Old Boys to win, 18-10. The second spell was more than half complete before the winner averted its ascendancy, with determined forward rushes and short kicks ahead by the ins-ide backs. The young Old Boys forwards held their bigger and more experienced opponents until that point, but finally succumbed to the continued pressure. The back-lines were evenly matched, but Old Boys’ reluctance to use their faster threequarters did not help them. On the very few occasions that the ball was spun along the backline the Suburbs defence was thoroughly tested. Both full-backs, K. Nicholas, for Suburbs, and R. Grenfell, for Old Boys, gave fine displays. Nicholas was the outstanding back on the field, as well as kicking four very good penalty goals. W. Cottrell provided the main thrust to the Suburbs backline, but tended to die with the ball when tackled. A. Steel, on the left wing for Old Boys, had few opportunities to use his pace.
The forward packs were evenly matched, with the Suburbs eight lasting much better and dominating play in the final quarter of the game. The referee was Mr R. H. Bull.
