TECHNICAL IS NEW LEADER
Technical Old Boys made a great recovery on Saturday to take over thfe leadership of the first division soccer competition for the Hurley Shield. Two goals down with 15 minutes to play, Technical beat High School Old Boys, 3-2.
With Christchurch City playing in the Chatham Cup semi-finals, Technical has now gone into the lead by one point The two teams meet in the main game at English Park next Saturday and this could be decisive for both teams.
In the only other Hurley Shield game played on Saturday, Shamrock comfortably beat Rangers, 3-0. League positions: Goals
SPIRITED RALLY With a two-goal lead and three-quarters of the game gone, H. 5.0.8. appeared to have the game sewn up against Technical, but a spirited rally by Technical brought it three vital goals in the closing stages. A firm, smooth pitch allowed both teams to play attractive football, and although H. 5.0.8. were 2-0 at half-time. Technical came very close at times. S. McAlpine was the key man in the H. 5.0.8. attack. Fast to the ball and with a powerful shot in both feet, he made several dangerous forays into Technical territory. Twice he was rewarded with goals, and his second was a magnificent solo effort. He picked up a loose ball in mid-field, made ground and chipped a short pass to C. Hicks. Seconds later he took the return pass, beat his man, drew the goal-keeper and sent a long low shot into the net. G. Griffiths, who had played a stalwart defensive role in the first half, started the turn of the tide, when he moved up on attack and slammed a hard shot past the goal-keeper, K. Samson.
The goal gave Technical the necessary stimulant. A Verham, back in the first team after an absence, worked like a trojan: p. Kay, who had received a knock on an old knee injury, was little more than a passenger. W. Logan added the equaliser, and redeemed his earlier lethargic efforts C. Jones, who had played a sound game all day, scored the decider after a brilliant solo effort minutes before the whistle. DICTATED TREND _ Able to dictate the trend of play because of its greater territorial advantage. Shamrock scored all three goals in the first 45 minutes to beat Rangers. Although Rangers were allowed to come back into the game in the second half when Shamrock left huge gaps tn the mid-field, Rangers were unable to take their opportunities. However, Shamrock combined
particularly well, endeavouring to let the baM do the work. An interesting newcomer to its attack was the 15-year-old M. EMte. playing in his first senior match. In the first half he kept the Rangers- experienced centrehalf, M. Shardlow, very busy by varying his play and matching him in the air.
Rangers made things hard themselves with Inaccurate passing and too often lacked fight and determination. Their forwards were largely contained by a lively defence but had several chances to score. The best was an easy header by W. Penman, but he ballooned the ball over the top. Shamrock’s goals were scored
by J. KMMck, D. Glubb and W Yates. Lower Grade Results
