Avon A Takes Grant Cup By Minute

Although without S. J. Stephen, one of its two leading riders, Avon A on Saturday won the Grant Cup, a 25-mile time trial for junior five-man cycling teams.

Stephen was under the impression the race was at Yaldhurst, not Halswell, and did not arrive until the front markers in an inter-club 25 miles handicap race were under way. .

The Papanui team, which did not include any particu-

iarly well-performed riders but was perhaps a rather more steady team, was ahead on time until about five miles from the finish, but Avon had been steadily picking up time, after being about half a minute down at the turn, and won bv nearly a minute. The ‘handicap race which followed the Grant' Cup was given added interest because the break bunch took fastest time, although fairly well strung out at the finish. The scratch riders were two minutes down on time. Results: —
