VIETNAM TROOPS

Outline By McNamara

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 12. The United Secretary of Defence, Mr Robert McNamara, told a press conference yesterday that another 18,000 United States troops would go to Vietnam by the end of July, bringing the total there to 285,000 men. Mr McNamara said that a further military build-up could be expected if the infiltration of troops from North Vietnam, estimated at about 4500 men a month, continued. He said that 45 days were required to alert and transport troop reinforcements to Vietnam. The Defence Secretary gave an optimistic report on military operations in Vietnam, saying that progress made by the United States and its allies there had exceeded expectations. Mr McNamara reported that Viet Gong and North Vietnamese fatalities had totalled 21,000 this year.
