Defence and foreign policy would transcend all other issues in this year’s Australian federal election campaign, said Mr Arthur Calwell, the Labour Opposition leader. Linked with them, he said, W’as Australia’s involvement in the undeclared war in Vietnam and the related “evil” of conscription of Australian youth. Mr Calwell said most Australians supported the commitment to the “cruel, dirty, unwinnable civil war” in Vietnam, provided it did not affect themselves or their families. He repeated that “we still intend to fight the next election on the Vietnam issue.”
