Car Lights

Sir,—There is a blind spot in the Transport Department’s campaign on car lights. The inspectors presumably know that the second filament which actuates the stop glow in rear lights can be burnt out and the other filament in the same bulb remain intact. Yet they do not require Testing Stations to check the foot-brake-operated stop glow. Your rear light can be approved while the stop glow filament in its bulb is burnt out- You could be unaware of this defect, for years maybe, and it can cause concertina crashes and worse. It is also elementary that direction lights should be checked at testing stations, yet they, too, are not tested. Hand signals are not used when modern cars are turning, and for stopping are indistinct, at night, anyway.—Yours, etc., A. B. CEDARIAN. June 7, 1966.

[The district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan) said: “I appreciate the correspondent’s views, but the reason that stop lights and direction lights are not included in the warrant-of-fitness examination is that it is not compulsory to have them fitted. The driver can still use hand signals if he wishes.” ]
