STONE LAID FOR CHAPEL
Bishop Warren is Warden of the College and Chancellor of the University of Canterbury.
The ceremony was performed in bright sunshine before a crowd of more than 100, including students, the board of governors, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University (Dr. L. L. Pownall). After a short prayer, those present recited Psalm 84 with the Bishop. The Lord’s Prayer was said and a hymn was sung. The Bishop then laid the stone and briefly addressed the gathering, The Bishop said the institution would be a community
asset and he hoped it would be one where the students could lead “the good life.” Some defined the good life as being purely materialistic, but there was another view basically held by all Christians that the good life was based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. He was glad the establishment of a chapel at the college was now assured. “May God bless this home and all who use it.” Construction of the chapel is expected to start immedi-
ately the residential blocks, now under construction, are completed in August. Housemen will occupy the new buildings at the beginning of September, and it is hoped the chapel will be in use early next year. The photograph shows a general view of the ceremony. Standing on the left is Canon J. 0. Rymer, principal of the college.
