Narrowed Field Of Research
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, June 12. To help combat its brain drain, New Zealand should concentrate on a few fields of research and do well at them, rather than spread its financal resources over a wide field, said a visiting American professor at Waikato University, Professor H. J. Critchfield.
“The brain drain from New Zealand is a serious problem it has to face," he said. “But New Zealand is too small a country to achieve a quick solution. It will be a long-term solution in which universities must provide the opportunities. “Finance is a factor in whether universities will be able to provide such opportunities. “But one very possible solution in advanced areas is for New Zealand to concentrate on a few fields and do well at them,” said Professor Critchfield. “An example of this is what has already been done in research in farming and agriculture, which has attracted many people prominent in these fields from overseas. “This type of research fits in with New Zealand’s economy and has set a mark in the world.” Professor Critchfield will lecture at Waikato University until August when he returns to his post at Western Washington State College, Bellingham. This is his third visit to
