TROTTING Disneyland Could Succeed At Nelson

Disneyland, a minor place-getter in two starts at Ashburton last week-end, is generally expected to graduate from maiden class at Nelson today. Mr J. W. G. Irving’s Light Brigade gelding will have two chances of winning on the first day of the Nelson Trotting Club’s winter meeting.

Disneyland is an acceptor for the Rai Handicap, first leg of the double for course patrons only, and the Pelorus Handicap, a sprint event to be run in divisions.

The Rai Handicap will be run over two miles. Disneyland missed victory by a nose over this distance on the first day at Ashburton. His was an outstanding run after a slow beginning in the faster run division of the Dromore Handicap. Hazelbum Lass, which finished third in the two-miie maiden event on the first day at Ashburton, and Black Tulip, an improver’s sixth in the same race, might be the hardest for Disneyland to beat in the Rai Handicap. In the second division of the Pelorus Handicap, in which Disneyland has drawn No. 14 at the start compared with No. 5 in his earlier race, his strongest rivals will probably be Gay John and Newiands.

The second leg of the oncourse double will be the Tahuna Handicap, a two-mile event for 2:18 class pacers. The scratching of Nocatchem from this race on Thursday has strengthened the possibility of a victory for Vandior, whose two wins last month included the two-mile Welcome Handicap at Oamaru.

The T.A.B. double will be run on the Caltex Gold Cup and the Stoke Handicap. Vantage, Eyreton and Ulight might battle it out for honours in the first leg. In the Stoke Handicap Student, Torpi and Showpiece are the most fancied runners. The weather in Nelson this week has been fine but there has not been sufficient drying to make the ground firm after heavy rain last week. The track will be soft.
