Certain Picked For Wingatui First Leg

"The Press'* Special Service DUNEDIN. Certain, winner of the Birthday Handicap on the first day of the meeting, worked well enough on Thursday to suggest that he could be the one to beat in the Provincial Handicap, the first leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double at Wingatui today.

There has been considerable drying at Wingatui since Monday’s meeting and if there is no change in the weather the prospects are for firm going.

Tundra, winner of the Provincial Handicap last year and the runner-up to Certain last Saturday, will carry strong support. Her Gore owners, Mr and Mrs W. L. Aynsley, intend to retire the Alpenhorn mare after today’s race. She will be let down before being mated with Ayrshire Barb, which is standing at Mr Aynsley’s stud. The top-weight Kumai looks a likely improver. He finished fifth in the Birthday Handicap and should run another sound race.

Flying York raced well below his best on Monday. He could make amends today. These four horses will probably dominate betting. The others should be at good odds. Gladaub, may prove too good for the open sprinters in the Members’ Handicap. Bold Venture, the topweight with 10-2. has strong form credentials.

Cranbrook, the beaten favourite on Monday, might make amends but the Riccarton candidate Mogambo, which finished third in his two earlier races at the meeting, makes more appeal. R. Dowling has been released from his engagement on Just Peter to ride Big Smoke. The on-course double will be on the Electric Stakes No. 1 and the Tainui Improvers’ Handicap. Flowing Gold and Belfie will be a well supported combination. Field*:— U.IS A.m.— ELECTRIC STAKES No. 1, £250: «f—Blue Stephan (4). Darkest
