Lei And Gus Picked For Manawatu Double
"The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Lei remains an outright fancy for today’s Palmerston North Handicap on the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting, but every hour of fine weather will make It more difficult for her to keep out Fleeting Moment and Lady Wild. This is because the Awapuni track has become puggy after a week of fine weather and frosty mornings. Lei is a better mare in wet ground and her raceday jockey, R. A. Jenkins, said yesterday he had some doubts concerning her ability to produce her best form under the existing conditions.
Even sc. Lei’s class should carry her through. She looked a picture at Wanganui last Monday when she mastered adverse footing to beat a strong field in the Connolly Handiicap. Both Fleeting Moment and Lady Wild excel in holding ground. Indications are that the track today will be very silow early and it is expected to start cutting out after the second event. <
Last fane up, Fleeting Moment won at Trentham. finishing fast at the end of 11 furlongs to head Lady Wild. Over the furlong shorter this time Lady Wild could trouble the Parliamentary Handicap winner, but there should be little between them.
Gus still seems an outstanding chance In the Stewards' Handicap, the second leg of the main double. Although this is to be his first taste of open company racing, he is not Hkelj to find the class beyond Mm. A smart final trial drew attention to David Jeff's chance. A difficult horse to ride, he die not go truly for M. J. Donoghue at Wanganui last week. In the hands of a stronger horseman, he could be the one to tesi Gus.
