YOUNG READERS
PEPPER LEADS THE STRING, by Jo Packer (Herbert Jenkins, 160 pp) is a combined pony and detective story set in an English village. The owner of a riding school is put out of action by being knocked down on the road, so his young friends Paul and Grace take over the running of the school, and are soon joined by other friends who come to camp and help. During a country ride they find an empty house and become curious about the contents of the locked barn there, but the caretaker tries most actively to discourage them. However, Grace has seen an old carriage that she wants to borrow for a Show, so the group are not to be deterred. Ultimately, after an exciting chase, villainy is unmasked. The reviewer found the swarm of children and ponies most confusing, but the story moves at a smart trot and there is much useful information on breaking horses to harness.
