BRIQUETTE WORKS IDLE
Miners Walk Off Job (N.Z. Press Association) WESTPORT, June 10. The Stockton mine and the Ngakawau briquetting works were idle today when about 140 Stockton miners walked off the job. The district manager of State mines (Mr T. M. V. Brazil) said this morning that the Stockton Miners* Union had approached the management for a meeting after the men had gone home, but this was refused until normal work was resumed. He had not been advised officially of the reason for the stoppage. Mr Brazil said the Ngaka. wau briquetting works were affected because the men employed there were members of the Stockton union. In the last few weeks the works have been producing 100 tons of briquettes a day. mainly for the Christchurch market.
Last night Mr Brazil said that he understood the miners would return to work on Monday morning. After work resumed, the management would hold talks with union representatives to discover the reason for the walk-out.
Members of the Stockton union would be working at the briquetting plant tomorrow to help make up production lost yesterday.
