HOUSEHOLD LAUNDRY

Only One Firm Still Collects One Christchurch laundry firm still runs a house collection and delivery service. Although the laundry specialises in domestic cleaning, household laundry is still done on a small scale.

The firm replied to a correspondent, “one of the many,” who asked why in a city such as Christchurch there was now no house collection and delivery of laundry. The correspondent realised there were depots, but said that they were of no use to people without transport of their own. Elderly women many of whom lived in flats or apartments where there were no washing or drying facilities were particularly affected. Another Christchurch laundry found it necessary to give up house collection and delivery because of increased competition from other laundries which specialised in one type of cleaning. A spokesman for the firm said a small amount of household laundry was still handled, but they could not afford the expense of drivers and vans.

Rocket Centre. Government science and technology experts have unveiled a blueprint of Japan’s new satellite and rocket launching centre to be built on Tanegashima Island. Japan hopes to launch its first stationary satellite from the centre by 1970.
