FACTORIES TOO

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 10.

Legislation governing the length of hair worn by male factory employees may be necessary, Mr P. G. Allen, national secretary of the Engineers’ Union, said today. “Where a worker is operating a machine with moving parts, it would be desirable to have regulations for the length of his hair,” he said. “The Factories Act already makes provision for this with regard to women, and it could

well be extended to apply to men and youths, in their own interest.”

The Secretary of Labour (Mr H. Parsonage) said the Labour Department had no plans to seek the introduction of legislation to have male factory employees cut their hair or cover it with a net.

The question had never been raised in New Zealand and there had been no reports of accidents resulting from men having long hair.
