RAIL FERRY LOADINGS
Restrictions Imposed
For the next two weeks the loading of goods for the Cook Strait road-rail ferry from Picton to Wellington will be restricted. Announcing this yesterday, the district traffic manager of the Railways Department (Mr M. R. Leineweber) said the restriction was necessary because of the accumulation of goods at Pieton caused by the Dashwood tunnel disaster and the washouts at the Ure and Clarence rail bridges. The ferry Aranui had taken over the service from the Aramoana on Thursday, and the Aramoana was now laid up for survey. The Aranui had the same capacity as the Aramoana. When both vessels were running, after June 27, it was expected that it would be possible to meet all demands for space for some time.
From June 27 crossings would be increased from 11 return trips a week to 17, which meant that 629 fourwheeled waggons could be carried each week from south to north. At present the capacity was 407 waggons a week.
